Because I have approximately 80 students each year in 7th grade Language Arts, it is difficult to learn everyone’s name in a few days. To speed up the process, I devised a “fun” game that also includes an English skill. First, I ask students to define an adjective. We discuss a few examples to describe people. I explain that the student must choose an adjective that begins with the same sound as their first name and that it has to be positive. I always start with marvelous Mrs. Armour. Then the first student shares his/her adjective with the class. That student also has to repeat mine and through the class we go. When everyone has recited his/her name and descriptive adjective, then I try to repeat all of them. It’s quite a job, but the students love it. You really could adapt it to any grade level and subject.
