(This is another version of an idea previously seen on this site)

Take a Pringles can and put in items that represent your summer. E.g.: (If I traveled, I put in a toy car or an airplane.) As you pull each item out of the can, talk about summer, the things you did, and the memories you now have. The items are used as a sort of cue card to jog memories. The students can also decorate the outside of the can to represent themselves. This is a great way to get kids talking and also it is better than writing that old ‘My Summer Vacation ‘essay. I usually assign this the first week and then do 5 or 6 cans a day. The kids are usually very excited to share their special cans.

If possible, talk to your incoming class before the summer and then they can do this ‘homework’ over the summer and be prepared when they come to your grade.
