Title – Making Words

By – Sarah Hollenbeck

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 2

Objectives: The second grade students will:

  • Use their letter pieces to spell various words shown by the teacher
  • Try to think of as many different words that can be spelled with the letters given

Materials:

  • Small letter pieces (set for each student)
  • Teacher kit (includes main word and 10-12 cards with smaller words spelled with same letters as in main word)
  • Large letter pieces (for teacher)
  • Pocket chart

Initiation: The teacher will tell the class that they are going to be doing a Making Words lesson (this excites the students). The teacher will select several students to pass out the needed letters to each student.

Procedure:

  1. The teacher says the first word and then uses that word in a sentence. The students then spell the word on their desks using the letter pieces.
  2. Once all of the students have spelled the word (not everyone has to be correct), the teacher selects one student to spell the word correctly by moving the large letter pieces around in the pocket chart. The teacher then places her word card beneath the correctly spelled word.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until all of the cards are used, leaving the final card (which has the main word on it).
  4. Students are now to rearrange all of their letters to spell one word (using all of the letters on their desks).
  5. Once the students have spelled the "secret word" (not all students will be able to do this but it is okay), they will be asked to think of some other words that can be made with the same letters.
  6. Teacher will write the additional words on the board.
  7. If time, ask 2 or 3 students to come up to the pocket chart and arrange all of the words in some sort of order or pattern (no set answer or pattern).

Closure: Students can get together in groups of two or three to play the "Mystery Word" game in which they secretly choose one of the words from the lesson and describe it or say a riddle about it. The other student(s) can guess which word it is. Students to take turns playing the game.

Assessment: Throughout the lesson, the teacher will be monitoring all of the students. The teacher will be looking for: participation and effort in spelling the words. For the final activity ("Mystery Word" game) the teacher will be looking for participation.

Language Arts Framework (2003): In this lesson, students will:

  • Select and apply strategies to facilitate word recognition and extend vocabulary development.
  • Speak and write using standard word patterns (syntax) and word choices (diction).
  • Use language appropriate to purpose, audience, and task.
  • Use knowledge of their language and culture to improve competency in English (if appropriate).
