Title – Interviewing

By – Sarah Hollenbeck

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 2

Objectives: The second grade students will:

  • interview an adult that works at XYZ School
  • share the questions and answers from the interview with the class

Materials:

    Students: Clipboard, interviewing sheet, pencil

Teacher: Beforehand, get permission from and compile a list of all adults in the school that are willing to be interviewed; also provide each consenting adult with a checklist to be completed at the end of the interview (for assessment purposes)

Initiation:

The teacher will invite in another teacher from the school. Both teachers will model to the class what it means to interview someone and be the interviewee. The teacher will then explain that the students will be interviewing an adult of their choice during the next few days.

Procedure:

    1. Go over the "rules" of an interview (polite, looking directly at the person speaking, give him/her time to answer, etc.)
    2. Have students think about an adult they would like to interview
    3. Students will now compile a list of 10 or more questions to ask the interviewee
    4. Allow time for students to interview their selected adult
    5. Once the interview is over, students will now think of a way to share their interview with their classmates (oral report, poster, newsletter article, etc.)

Closure: The students will now share with their classmates who they interviewed, the questions asked of that person, his/her answers, and any interesting discussion that may have been spawned by one or more of the questions.

Assessment: Get feedback from each adult that was interviewed. Perhaps the teacher could supply him/her with an easy checklist to be completed on the student interviewer. The teacher will also be assessing the final presentation of the interview to the class as well as the notes compiled by the student during the time of the interview.
