Materials – The Odyssey

Start by grouping the students into five groups. Have four to five students in each group.

Group 1 will have to design a brochure titled “Odyssey Cruises”. This will require time in the computer lab. Microsoft Word has a tri-fold brochure template, all the students will have to do is listen to the story and write down all the places Odysseus visited in his adventures, and list the cost to travel from place to place. It will make the brochure more authentic if they listed their prices in Greek.

Group 2 will design a map routing Odysseus’s trip home and tell what happened at each place he stopped on the map.

Group 3 will research all the gods and goddesses that are in the story and tell how each affected Odysseus’s trip home.

Group 4 will draw pictures of each adventure. The pictures can be computer enhanced or the students can use their own artistic skills.

Group 5 will take the names of the characters in the story and gods and goddesses in the story and design a crossword puzzle.

It will make it easier on the students to list all the names of the characters and the part they played in the story on a sheet of paper so as you read the story the students will already be familiar with the names and places in the story. This will also help group 5 with their crossword puzzle.

Read the story until you come to the part where Odysseus finally reaches the island of his home. Stop there and let the students write their own ending. Ask them to explain how Odysseus reclaims his home in their own words. Have a couple of volunteers read their endings aloud.

This will also be a good time to let the groups present their projects to the class.

After they have turned in their own ending, continue reading the last chapter of the story.

An additional test on the story itself would be optional.
