Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 4th-5th grade

Materials

paper

pencils

dictionary

The list of words below. I would put just one word at a time on a piece of paper and use one word a week as a bonus on spelling tests.

Activity:

Pass out one word on the list to the class. One day have them look up the word for homework and find out what it means. Then talk about it in class the next day. Then the next day for homework they can use the word in a sentence and write it down on the same paper. The next day they can write it 5 times and turn it in for homework and then if they write it correctly and give the defintion on their spelling test they can earn 2 extra points. They could earn 1 for spelling the word correctly and 1 if they give the defintion.

These words will be very important on proficiency tests:

Word list:

analyze

classify

characteristics

compare

contrast

demonstrate

describe

determine

explain

evaluate

identify

infer/inferences

interpret

irrelevant

patterns

recognize

Depending on the age and the skills of the children you might want to just be sure they understand the words and what they mean. The teacher could do one a week and not use any type of testing just use the words often in class everyday!!
