Title – A Piece of the Pie!

By – Brenda Hernandez

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 1

TEKS: Reading/Variety of texts (10 B) use graphs, charts, signs, captions, and other informational texts to acquire information.

Learning Objective(s): The student will be able to:

1. Explain the definition of a homonym without error.

2. Match each pie top to its correct homonym with 100% accuracy.

3. Identify the word’s definition with the right spelling with minor errors.

Materials Needed:

1. Pie crust pattern

2. Cherry pattern

3. Glue

4. Scissors

5. Foil paper

6. Red and brown construction paper (red is for the cherries, brown is for the pie crusts)

7. Stapler

8. Whole punch

9. Bulletin board

10. Permanent marker

11. Vocabulary list:

    I eye
    one won
    for four
    to two
    right write
    new knew
    so sew

Pre-Activity Preparation: Have seven pie and crust patterns cut out, all foil papered tins stapled to a bulletin board with vocabulary words written on them with permanent markers, write the alike words to the pie tops, have title on the top of bulletin, paste cherries on top of the pie crust.

Transition: They will be standing up in two teams in front of the bulletin board.

Introduction: A homonym is when two words sound alike, but have a different spelling and meaning. Like in their vocabulary list, the word

to

and

two

sound alike. Say “

I’ve created a game with our vocabulary list

.”

Procedure:

After giving your introduction,

1. Give the children instructions on how they should behave and send them to their location to play this game.

2. Have Team 1 on the left side of the bulletin board.

3. Team 2 will be on the right side.

4. Make sure that teams are about equal in number.

5. Write Team 1 and Team 2 on the white board using a t-chart form to keep track of points earned by each team.

How to play the game:

6. A member from each team will run to teacher and gently get the pie top from him/her.

7. That student must match the homonyms from the pie top to the pie shell.

8. If they get it correct they will then get a point.

9. To get a second point, they should be able to give you a sentence using the word that they grabbed from the teacher.

10. If they get it wrong the other team has a chance to give a sentence, but instead of using the pie top word, they will use the pie shell word to earn their point.

(For example: if the pie crust word that they grabbed is “for”, then they must match it to the word “four” and then can give you a sentence for the pie crust – ex: This apple is “for” my sister. They will then receive the two points.)

11. You will keep doing this until each student has participated.

Closure: The teacher with the students will count the points that were earned by each team. Then say “Team # ___ won today, good job” “Everybody give yourselves a pat on the shoulders for playing this game well.”
