Title – Spelling Words Review Game

By – Jocelyn Satterfield

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Grade Level – 2-3

Introduction:

This game is a great way to review weekly spelling words! I got this idea from
my mother who teaches fifth grade.

Game Name:

    Here Comes the Judge

Object:

The object of the game is to make sure that the spelling words are spelled
    correctly and are written neatly.

Procedure:

  • To start the game, you pick one student to be "The Judge." The
judge stands by the door outside the classroom (

    make sure you can still
    see the student

    ).
  • Pick three other students to come to the white board or chalkboard.
  • Teacher calls out the spelling word.
  • Each student writes the spelling word (

    without peeking

    ). Each student
only has one chance to erase his/her writing.
  • After the students have written the spelling word, they all go back to
    their desks.
  • If a student misspells the word, the teacher erases the misspelled word.
  • Then the class starts chanting "

Here comes the judge, here comes
    the judge!

" This is the judge’s cue to come back in the classroom.
  • The judge looks at the words written on the board. He/she picks the one
he/she thinks is written the neatest. The student who wrote the winning spelling
word will then become "The Judge."
  • Continue game until all spelling words have been reviewed.

Final note:

My students love this game! It gets them to want to study their spelling
    words as well!
