Title – Language

Grade Level – 7 and 8 year olds
(The following lesson plan’s achievement objectives are linked to the “English in the New Zealand” Curriculum document It can however be linked to any “language” oriented curriculum document featured in countries world wide). You can adapt it to suit the “Curriculum” document in your country.
DURATION:
2 x 45 minutes
RESOURCES:
pens, pencils, felt tips/crayons, large sheets of paper (for the big book), stapler(s), pieces of paper (for “Word at a time Story” drafts), flash cards.
ACHIEVEMENT OBJECTIVES:
1. The children will listen to and interact with
others in a group discussion (English in the
New Zealand Curriculum Document, p. 30)
2. The children will use common conventions of writing
and organization of text which will influence their
understanding. (English in the New Zealand
Curriculum Document, p. 36)
3. The children will use a variety of “cues” to gain
meaning to their reading (English in the New Zealand
Curriculum Document, p. 34)
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of this lesson the children will…
1. …have listened carefully and actively to the
ideas of others (when they come to devise their own
story.
2. …have written their own (group)”Word at a time
Story.”
3. …have sounded words out to gain further meaning
to their reading.
LEARNING EXPERIENCES:
1. Icebreaker game: “Egg Plant” Each child will be
asked 8 questions. They must refrain from laughing
when answering each question with the word
“Egg Plant.”
2. Letters/Telegrams/or Cards: In groups, the children
will improvise writing a letter, telegram, birthday/
Christmas/Thank you card that they are going to send
to a friend/relative/or teacher.
3. Word at a time story: In groups, the Children
invent a story, saying one word each at a time.
(One or two members write the Story down as it is
recited).
4. The children turn their “Word at a time story” into
a big book (using large sheets of paper stapled
together), and illustrate it.
5. The children share their “Word at a time Story” with
the rest of the class.
8. The children share what they have learnt from
carrying out the whole of the “Word at a time Story”
exercise.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES
1. Did the children listen carefully and actively to
the ideas of others (when they came to devise their
own story?).
2. How successfully did the children write their own
“Word at a time Story?”
3. Did the children sound words out to gain further
meaning to their reading?
