Title – News Writing

Grade Level – 9-12

Objective:

  • At the end of the session the students are expected to:

    1. identify the elements of the news story;
    2. write a news story based on given data

Materials:

  • cartolina
  • pentel pen
  • bond paper
  • journalism handbook

Procedure:

  1. Priming: Name Game

    • Arrange the students into groups of four.
    • Name a popular figure and the first group to tell something about the name wins a point.
    • Ask: How did you know about these people?
  2. Activity:

    • Give each group sheets of colored paper containing paragraphs of a news story. Have each group arrange the paragraphs in the proper order. Let the group post their work on the board.
  3. Analysis:

    • Ask the following questions:

      1. What is the news all about?
      2. What is the best arrangement of the paragraphs?
      3. What is your basis in arranging them as such?
      4. What do you notice in the first paragraph?
      5. Do you think the news presented would interest the students and instructors in this school? Why?
      6. How will you decide which story should be written as news?
      7. Do you think you, too, can write news stories as newspaper writers do?
  4. Abstraction:

    • Give a brief lecture on the following:

      1. What is news?
      2. Its elements
      3. Its structure – The inverted pyramid
      4. The lead
  5. Application:

    • Present four sets of facts and figures about an event.
    • Let the students decide which of the four could be a good news story.
    • Let them write a news story based on the data selected.
