Title – Descriptive Writing

Objectives:

  • Students will identify descriptive words and phrases.
  • Students will use descriptive words and phrases in their writing.

Materials:


  • When I Was Young in the Mountains

    by Cynthia Rylant.
  • Chart Paper
  • Markers

Procedure:

    Read and discuss

    When I Was Young in the Mountains

    by Cynthia Rylant. Before reading, tell students to listen for descriptive words and phrases in the story. Remind students descriptive words and/or phrases help create “pictures” in their minds. Encourage students to jot down descriptive words/phrases while the story is being read. After the reading of the book, have students share the descriptive words and phrases. Chart their responses. Students are then asked to write about an event from when they were young using descriptive words and phrases. Again,
    reminding them the purpose of this is to help create a clear “picture” in the minds of the readers.

Closure:

    Once students have completed their writing, have each student share their work with the rest of the class. The other students will be asked to identify the descriptive words/phrases from each piece of writing.
