Title – Beach Ball Paragraph Writing

By – Marcy Winograd

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Secondary Subjects – Language Arts

Grade Level – 4-5

Objective: Students write expository paragraphs while throwing a beach ball in the air.

Materials Needed: Beach ball or Goof Ball, overhead projector, transparency

Procedure: The teacher writes a topic sentence on the transparency. Example: I had terrible car problems today. (Younger students enjoy the idea of owning a car!) The teacher then writes sentence starters beneath the topic sentence: First, Next, Finally, As a result. After reading the topic sentence, the teacher throws the beach ball to students, asking them to supply supporting points (First, my car stalled in the driveway. Next, the engine overheated on the freeway. Finally, the car alarm broke and blared non-stop for two hours.) For the concluding sentence, the teacher asks a student to explain what difference all of this made. The teacher throws the ball to the student and the student uses the last transition phrase, “As a result, I missed work and went home with a headache.”

After students create several paragraphs “in the air” they write their own paragraphs, underlining the topic sentences, circling the transition words, and drawing a star next to the conclusion.

Assessment: Students use a rubric to self-assess their paragraphs. The top score on the rubric would require a topic sentence, logically organized supporting details, and a conclusion that explains the bottom line or what difference it made.
