Title – Writing about a Photograph

By – Rachel Bohlman

Primary Subject – Language Arts

Secondary Subjects – Art

Grade Level – 1-2

Materials Needed:

  • Chart paper and writing instrument for teacher
  • Enlarged photograph for teacher
  • 1 photograph for each child (variety of pictures to choose from)
  • Student journals and pencils

Procedure:

As students are seated, show them a photograph.

Ask students to tell what they think this picture is about. Ask them to visualize what might be happening in this picture. Are there people involved? Where is it? When is it?

As students share their ideas, jot them down on the top half of the chart paper. (This is the writing plan.)

Discuss with students what we will write about the picture. Depending on student ideas, write a 2 to 3 sentence story on chart paper. Students can share the pen with sight words they know, and help with sounding out unfamiliar words.

Model-write the story, using their phonetic spellings, and discussing capitalization and punctuation.

Hand out a photograph to each student, explaining that they will be writing a story about their picture in their journal.

As students return to their workspace, circulate and help those who are struggling. Remind them of writing conventions, and remind them to use their phonetic knowledge for new words.
