Title – Butterfly Window Hanging

By – Courtney Olschwanger

Primary Subject – Art

Grade Level – 1-2

TEKS: 1.2C – increase manipulative skills using a variety of materials to produce drawings, paintings, prints, and constructions.

Learning Objectives: given wax paper, the students will create a butterfly.

Materials Needed: waxed paper, crayon shavings, scissors, an iron, holepunch, and a few inches of string.

Preparation: Make an example of the activity, so they know what it looks like.

Transition: The students can stay at their own desks, and get out scissors. Then each needs to get the other needed supplies.

Procedure:

Step 1: “Who wants to make a beautiful butterfly? We are going to make a beautiful butterfly for the sun to shine on in the window!”

Step 2: Fold a piece of waxed paper in two. Draw half a butterfly with the body at the fold.

Step 3: Flip the paper over and draw the other half of the butterfly (using the original as your template).

Step 4: Open the waxed paper and put it on a flat surface.

Step 5: Put some crayon shavings on the waxed paper and inside. Cover the waxed paper with another piece.

Step 6: Have an adult iron the two layers together on low heat. Cut out the butterfly. Punch a hole near the top for the string to hang by.

Step 7: (Closure): Have all the students hang their artwork in the windows and present them.
