Title – Mitten Lacing Activity

By – Stacy Tierney

Primary Subject – Art

Grade Level – 1

This is part of a unit on mittens for my art class. My kids will be decorating paper mittens and then lacing them up with string.

You will need:

    File Folders

    Construction paper

    Scissors

    Single hole punch

    Yarn

    Crayons

Getting ready to present your lesson:

First you need to make mittens out of file folders for the kids to trace.

    Step 1:

Have one example done ahead of time to show the kids so they do not get confused. Make sure you completely explain the process of how they will be making the mittens.

    Step 2:

First they will start by tracing the mittens on construction paper and then cut them out.

    Step 3:

After they cut them out, they will color them anyway they want.

    Step 4:

When they are coloring, go around punching holes so they can string the yarn through.

    Step 5:

After they have holes in them they will need to string the yarn through.

    Step 6:

After they finish this you can have them repeat steps 2-5 if you want them to make a pair.
