Title – Filet of Sole

By – Jana Barrett

Primary Subject – Art

Grade Level – K-3

This lesson is fun and easy and a great way to discuss visual texture.

Materials:

    White drawing paper

    Crayons

    Blue construction paper

    glue

    scissors

Each student will use the side of a crayon to create a rubbing of the bottom of his/her shoe onto the white drawing paper.

The REAL texture of the shoe sole has now become VISUAL texture on the paper.

The student will look at the rubbing of his/her shoe and imagine what kind of fish he/she might see there. The pattern of the shoe soles makes interesting “scales” for the fish.

Outline the shoe rubbing and draw the heel to make a “fishy” tail. Add an eye, fins, gills, whatever it takes to make this the most special fish ever.

Cut the fish out and paste it onto blue construction paper.

Using crayons, add seaweed, smaller fish, and other things one might find in the ocean.
