Title – Science with milk

By – Debbie Haren

Primary Subject – Science

Secondary Subjects -

Grade Level – First – Third

Materials:

toothpicks

food coloring

pie pan

whole milk

dish detergent

Procedure:

Pour a small amount of milk into the pie pan. Now put a few drops of food coloring in the milk. Then put a small amount of dish detergent on the end of the toothpick and then insert it in the milk. If you put the toothpick in the middle of one of the drops of food coloring the dish detergent will react to the fat in the milk. It will start to disperse the food coloring all over the pan. Try to have the students figure out why the dish detergent makes the milk react.(Because of the fat in the milk. It makes it separate out of the milk. This is a great science experiment!

Objectives:

To have students see a chemical reaction. For students to be able to write down observations. For students to make hypothesis about what is going to happen..

Learning the scientific method and how it works!

Extension:

Try different types of milk. Such as low fat and 2% instead of whole milk. Is there a difference? Why?
