Title - Lesson Plan 9: Mini-Lessons On Final Project: Visual Representation

Grade Level - 5th-6th Grade
NOTE: This is lesson 9, which is separated into 5 mini-lessons, of the Colonization of Mars Thematic Unit. This is part 4.

Objective:
Student group will identify and practice the strategies necessary in assessing the merits of
their peers' Mars Colony designs as they decide which components they wish to utilize in the final class design.
Materials Provided:
Papier-mâché
Color pencils, crayons, markers, tissue paper
Butcher paper
Potting soil or sand
Paper cups
Paper plates
Variously shaped rocks
Student requested materials
Estimated Time: 10 minutes of instruction and 50 minutes of project research
Procedure:
1.Sit with the students at a table away from the other students.
2.Re-read the directions in the guidelines sheet that was given to them.
3.Check for understanding by having students explain in their own words what they are to do.
4.Lay out the designs from all the groups in front of the students.
5.Ask the students what they like and dislike about each design and to explain why.
6.When they have finished speaking, give them your input by stating something like, "I like this design because it addresses the issue of how to create food, but it doesn't address shelter. This one has a good design for transportation but does not include how to manage wastes. So what do you think you should do?" Lead a discussion on finding all the positives and negatives in each design and creating a new design based on each group's strengths and weaknesses.
7.Also explain the need to create miniature model of the design before making the final project.
8.Inform them that they have access to all the art materials that are out, but they can request other materials if they need them for their project. Take them to the art materials center and lead them in a demonstration of making papier-mâché, where they follow along as you demonstrate. As a group create a terrain by blowing up various sized balloons and laying the papier-mâché across them and letting it dry.
9.Answer any last questions, tell them to help each other, and raise their hands if they get stuck.
10.Inform them that they may begin working on their assessing the other groups designs a little more thoroughly. When they have decided on which components they want to use from each group, inform them that they may begin designing their miniature copy of the final colony.
Evaluation:
The teacher will assess the accuracy of their work, compliance with the directions, and taking an active role in the project.
