Primary Subject - Science
Grade Level - VA SOL 6.10 (Can be adopted for other grades)
My Very Energetic Mom Just Served Us Nine Planets?
Lesson Plan for Science:
Objective: TLW learn the names and order of the 9 planets.
VA SOL: 6.10
Hook: Draw a picture of the space shuttle to use in space flight for today's mission.
Lecture/Activity: TLW consider whether we are alone in the universe. TLW learn that there are other places in the universe. TLW learn the names/order of the 9 planets in our solar system. TLW learn the acronym MVEMJSUNP for aid in the memory of the order.
Visuals: (Overhead) slide - Colorized pictures of the planets. (PowerPoint presentation of planets / e-mail request for download of the presentation I created). Teacher-made disks that resemble the actual planets. Teacher-made solar system maps.
Check for Understanding: Low: What planet do you live on? Medium: Which planets seem to be the biggest? Which planets have rings? High: What does MVEMJSUNP mean? (Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Neptune Pluto) How is the order related to the distance from the sun?
Guided practice: TLW place each planet (teacher-made paper disks) in the proper order. TLW name and color the solar system map (teacher/workbook produced).
Independent Practice: Given colored clay or gray clay w/ paint, TLW construct the solar system by making a model of each planet and the sun and place them in order of distance from the sun. TLW create labels for each planet (w/ name, # in the order, distance from sun).
Homework: TLW color/label a solar system map.
Project/Research: TLW determine the number of moons each planet has (as discovered through today).
