By - Dawn Weisbrod
Subject - Science, Language Arts
Grade Level - 6

School: Harrison Middle School

Date: July 26, 2000

Duration: 2 weeks

Description: The students will choose an ocean dweller and research it. They will begin with a KWL chart and other graphic organizers. They will use the information to create a flipchart of their ocean creature.

Objectives: The students will correctly use a KWL chart to organize information.
The students will create a flip chart of their animal about it's habitat, characteristics, a labeled diagram of the animal, a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting their animal to another student's, and any other important information.
Materials: Research books, encyclopedias, paper, crayons/markers/colored pencils, KWL chart, rulers

Procedure:
1. The students will select a sea creature. I do not let anyone have a duplicate.
2. The students complete the K and the W part of the KWL chart about their assigned sea animal.
3. Next they think of things they would like to know about the animal, keeping in mind that their flip chart must contain information on habitat, characteristics, and any other important information, including a labeled diagram of the animal. The students will fill out the L part of the KWL chart.
4. Now the students will research their animal using the research materials and the internet.
5. The students will be partnered with another student and will complete a Venn Diagram of the two animals, which will be placed in the flipchart.
6. The students will create a flipchart with the information that was gathered.
7. The students will draw and label the animal in the flipchart.
Assessment: Accuracy of the flipchart, KWL chart and Venn Diagram
