Major Objective: Students will complete follow-up activities in the computer lab after learning about lightning in their science class. These computer activities will reinforce what students learned about lightning and lightning safety in their science classes.
Grade Levels: 3
Materials: Computer, printer, internet access, copies of scavenger hunt, pencils, computer paper.

Time Required: 3 fifty minute class periods.
Activities and Procedures:
Day 1: Have the first 2 websites above bookmarked for the students. The students will go to each of the websites in order to answer the questions in the scavenger hunt below.
1. List two important safety tips to protect yourself from being struck by lightning: _____________________________________
2. Being in a car or truck is good protection from lightning. What part of the car or truck is it that actually protects you from the lightning?________________________________________
3. If your hair stands on end or your skin starts to tingle, lightning might be about to strike. What position should you get in to protect yourself from lightning striking you._______________________________________________________
4. What is the name of the book recommended in this website for more information about lightning? ___________________________________________
5. What should you do if you are playing outside and lightning strikes near you?_________________________________
Day 2: Have students click on the link in website #1 to read about a young girl's story who was struck by lightning while out on a hike with her parents. This site includes a link to another site where children and adults who have been struck by lightning share their stories. Have students read a few of these stories and then share them with the rest of the class.
Follow-Up/Extension:

Part 1: Have students go to the website above and print out the Super Sparkler experiment. Discuss the directions for this experiment and explain to them they will be doing this in science class next week with their science teacher.
Part 2: Have students go to the National Lightning Safety Institute website http://www.lightningsafety.com/ and locate the "PERSONAL LIGHTNING SAFETY TIPS" document (below). Review it with students. Have each student print out a copy to take home.
PERSONAL LIGHTNING SAFETY TIPS
1.PLAN in advance your evacuation and safety measures. When you first see lightning or hear thunder, activate your emergency plan. Now is the time to go to a building or a vehicle. Lightning often precedes rain, so don't wait for the rain to begin before suspending activities.
2.IF OUTDOORS...Avoid water. Avoid the high ground. Avoid open spaces. Avoid all metal objects including electric wires, fences, machinery, motors, power tools, etc. Unsafe places include underneath canopies, small picnic or rain shelters, or near trees. Where possible, find shelter in a substantial building or in a fully enclosed metal vehicle such as a car, truck or a van with the windows completely shut. If lightning is striking nearby when you are outside, you should:
A. Crouch down. Put feet together. Place hands over ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder.
B. Avoid proximity (minimum of 15 ft.) to other people.
3. IF INDOORS... Avoid water. Stay away from doors and windows. Do not use the telephone. Take off head sets. Turn off, unplug, and stay away from appliances, computers, power tools, & TV sets. Lightning may strike exterior electric and phone lines, inducing shocks to inside equipment.
4. SUSPEND ACTIVITIES for 30 minutes after the last observed lightning or thunder.
5. INJURED PERSONS do not carry an electrical charge and can be handled safely. Apply First Aid procedures to a lightning victim if you are qualified to do so. Call 911 or send for help immediately.Know Your Emergency Telephone Numbers
