Learning Cycle Lessons - Topic Sound
Lesson 1 - Objective: To observe loud and soft sounds
Discussion Points:
How would you make a loud sound?
How would you make a soft sound?
How can you make a different sound?
Invention of the Idea:
Teams will be given rubber bands and plastic cups.
Students will try to make loud and soft noises.
Students will then be given butter dishes.
Students will then be given wood blocks.
Students will then be given pencils.
Application of the Idea:
Given the objects above, cardboard, tape, string, and whatever else is handy, students will create a musical instrument that makes loud and soft sounds.
Lesson 2 - Objective: To observe high and low sounds and prediction.
Invention of the Idea:
Teams will be given a set of nails of assorted sizes taped to sponges. Teams will also be given pencils.
Students will predict what sounds the nails will make
and then test the sounds.
This will be repeated with different size wood blocks, then different size pencils, then pens instead of pencils.
Discussion Points:
How would you make a high sound?
How would you make a low sound?
How would you make a different sound?
Application of the Idea:
Given two straws with the ends already cut properly, and a pair of scissors, individual students will make one flute that produces high sounds and one flute that produces low sounds.
Lesson 3 - Objective: To understand that different pitches are produced from different objects made of different materials.
Invention of the Idea:
Students will be given rubber bands and butter dishes and asked to make different pitches. Students will be given pencils and pens and asked to use them to make different pitches.
Students will be given forks and pennies and asked to use them to make different pitches.
Students will then be given rags and asked to see if they can change the pitch different materials make.
Discuss Points:
What material makes a higher pitch?
What material makes a lower pitch?
How does the rag change the pitch of the material?
Expansion of the Idea:
Students will be given precut straws and scissors and asked to use them to make different pitches.
