Little quiz on density:

Please put your answer in the left blank. Show all work for full credit.

___________1)          An object has these dimensions: The length is 5 centimeters, the width is 2 centimeters and the height is 10 centimeters. What is the volume? (Remember that volume is L x w x h.)

____________2)          The object in the above question weighs 65 grams. What is its density?

____________3)          Your teacher gives you a little square block of metal which is exactly 1 centimeter square. It is small, but weighs 4.5 grams. What is its density?

____________4)          A piece of metal weighs 3 grams and has a density of 2.70 grams per cubic centimeter. What must be its volume? (Remember that since density is weight over volume, volume must be weight over density)

____________5)          A piece of foil has a volume of 0.90 cubic centimeters. If the foil is 30 centimeters by 18 centimeters, what is its height? (Remember that volume is L x w x h)

____________6)          A piece of aluminum foil weighs 1.60 grams. It is 30 cm by 10 cm. If we assume that the density of the foil is 2.70 grams per cubic centimeter, what is the thickness of the foil?

____________7)          A furniture maker wants to determine if two pieces of wood are of the same type. He knows that the two woods have different densities. The first piece is 30 X 14 X 2.5 centimeters and weighs 350 grams. The second is 15 X 15 x 10 centimeters and weighs 900 grams. Are they different types of wood?

____________8)          When salt is added to water the density increases. Marine biologists use this characteristic to measure the salinity in sea water. A biologist knows that the density of the water must be between 1.05 and 1.08 gr/cc. She finds that 80 milliliters weighs 83.2 grams. Is this water within the limits?

____________9)          A teacher finds a small block of metal in a closet. The block is 1.5 x 4 X 10 centimeters. The block is very light. It weighs only 160 grams. The teacher wants to know if it is aluminum (density 2.70) or magnesium (density 1.79). Which is it?

__________10)          Sarah is very concerned about her weight. She knows that she is about 5 kilograms over weight. Her health club can do an evaluation of her percent body fat based on her density. She wants to see if she can lower her fat to muscle ratio. (Fat is less dense than muscle) Based on the chart information, did she succeed in increasing her muscle ratio as determined by a higher body density? Complete the right column in the chart. (HINT: the units "grams per cc" are the same as "kilograms per liter".)

Weight

Volume in liters

Sara's density in kg/l

before diet           59 kilograms          64 liters
after diet          54 kilograms          52 liters
