Title - The Incredible Yuma Bat and Clapper Rail - Reading Comprehension Strategies

Grade Level - 6
Period of Time: One-half month unit of study
Purpose: to introduce to the students the wonderful world of Bats and Clapper Rails.
Language Arts Standards (Concept 6 - Comprehension):
PO 3. Generate clarifying questions in order to comprehend text.
PO 4. Use graphic organizers in order to clarify the meaning of the text.
Other Subjects that will be integrated: Mathematics, Computer, Library Research
Materials: Books, Computer, Library
Objective: P The students will be able to show their reading comprehension with graphs that demonstrate their abilities to formulate what each author is trying to clarify in their stories about bats and clapper rails.
Anticipatory Set: The desired experiences will be visual and simulated with interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences and with affective and cognitive domains.
The teacher will assign group two to find books of interest in the library and on the internet. Optional: They then will have a reading marathon which will culminate into a contest to be held in the city and finally in the capital judged by the Superintendent of Schools which will be sent to the U.S. capitol to be judged by the President himself. This will also help the Aims requirements for reading comprehension. When they have collected all the books and have done their readings they will also do a reading for the classroom and tell the class what the Bat and Clapper Rail are like and how we can save them from extinction.
Accommodations: There will be the same assignments in Braille, and Sign Language charts.
