Title - The Incredible Yuma Bat and Clapper Rail - History and Nature of Science
By - Brenda E. Wilson
Primary Subject - Science
Grade Level - 6

Period of Time: One-half month unit of study

Purpose: to introduce to the students the wonderful world of Bats and Clapper Rails.

Strand 2: History and Nature of Science
Concept 2: Nature of Scientific Knowledge
Understand how science is a process for generating knowledge.
PO 3. Apply the following scientific processes to other problem solving or decision making situations:
* observing * questioning * communicating * comparing * measuring * classifying * predicting * organizing data * inferring * generating hypotheses * identifying variables

Other Subjects that will be integrated: History and Technology
Materials: Paper and Pencil to take notes at the field trip sites.

Objective: P The students will be going on a field trip to the Yuma West Wetlands and Arizona Western College sites to observe, question, and classify the areas where clapper rails and bats come together.

Anticipatory Set: They then will get hands on experience with the guides from these sites on how to observe and possibly look at up close and personally. They will take notes on the talks these guides will be giving them and notes on what they saw at these sites that were different then their desired objectives of possibly seeing bats and clapper rails. When they are finished with the field trip they will return to class and take their observations and put their analysis of what they saw and what they didn't see into the research project folder that they will make for all subjects and curriculum.

The week before the field trip the teacher will give each student a permission slip to take home with them and they will have to have it signed one day before the field trip so that the teacher can say how many students will be on the buses. This field trip is the most important trip in this entire unit plan so this permission slip will determine the grade of the student. They must attend this class or they will fail this unit. The field trip will be all day and the class will be taught by the sites directors and they must be courteous and not disruptive so that the person teaching will have an easy smooth time in showing them the different sites at this field trip location. The teacher will also have these professionals get with the groups on coming over to the sites for collection data material at the same time showing the entire class how to observe and collect data.

Accommodations: There will be the same assignments in Braille, and Sign Language charts.
