Title - The Incredible Yuma Bat and Clapper Rail - Expository Writing

Period of Time: One-half month unit of study
Purpose: to introduce to the students the wonderful world of Bats and Clapper Rails.
Language Arts Standards:
Concept 2: Expository
Expository writing includes nonfiction writing that describes, explains, informs, or summarizes ideas and content. The writing supports a thesis based on research, observation, and/or experience.
PO 3. Write a process essay that includes:
a. a thesis statement
b. supporting details
c. introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs
Other Subjects that will be integrated: Science
Materials: Books, Computer with paper for printing, scratch paper for notes.
Objective: C The students will formulate the end results of their hypothesis on the similarities and differences of the clapper rail and bat.
Anticipatory Set: Then they will come up with a thesis statement about all of the materials they collected on the characteristics of the bat and clapper rail. They will compile a complete report from this thesis statement that will satisfy the standards of writing, mathematical, and scientific approaches to the research of the bat and clapper rail.
In this lesson, students will collect all data necessary for a logical hypothesis towards saving the Bat and Clapper Rails. This class will do a thorough research on the characteristics of the Bat and Clapper Rail and what if any thing is the correlation between them. The teacher will show the students the scientific process of formulating an hypothesis, a thesis statement, and conclusion with the book on how to write for elementary students. This will introduce future requirements in writing for the Aims tests. This class will know what writing and collecting is all about when they have finished this lesson.
Accommodations: There will be the same assignments in Braille, and Sign Language charts.
