Title - Exploring the Sense of Touch

Academic Standards: Science and Technology/ Inquiry and Design
3.2.4-B/ Describe objects in the world using the five senses.

Objectives: Students will be able to identify what parts of the body are used for our sense of touch.
  • Students will be able to predict some of the things they would be able to feel if they were put in a situation.
  • Students will discover objects based only on the sense of touch.
  • Students will be able to use all 5 senses to describe the process of making and eating popcorn.
  • Students will be able to construct their own poem using all 5 senses.
Subject Integration: English, art

Materials: computer and projector, beach picture found on the internet, discovery bags, discovery bag worksheet, popcorn popper, popcorn, poem papers

Vocabulary Words: rough, smooth, texture

Instructional Procedures:
  • Anticipatory Set: Explain that the thing that we touch have many different textures: rough, smooth, soft, hard. Explain that we not only use our hands for our sense of touch, but if we have our shoes off, we can also use our feet.

  • Developmental Activities: Show the students a picture of a beach scene. Use the computer to get the image and the projector to project the image on the screen.

  • Ask the students to make a list of the things that they think they would be able to touch and feel if they were in this picture. Encourage the students to share their ideas with their table.

  • Explain that we are going to do an activity in which you will use your sense of touch to try to determine what is in the brown bags. Distribute the discovery bags and worksheets. Remind students that they are NOT to look in the bags, but they are to use their sense of touch to try and discover what is in them.

  • Discuss what items the students thought were in the bags and show them what it really was.

  • Closure: Use an old fashion popcorn popper to make a bowl of popcorn for each table. Explain that the students should use all 5 of their senses. Ask them to think about how they will use each of them and discuss it while they are eating their popcorn. I would make it a point to be sure that none of the students are allergic to popcorn.
Assessment: I would walk around the room and observe as the students shared their list of things they would be able to feel at the beach.
  • Assess the student's knowledge by the observations they made with the discovery bags and the popcorn.

  • Evaluate the student's poems for the correct terms.

  • Evaluate the student's pictures and terms on the back of their poem.
Special Needs Adaptations: Visually Impaired: When looking at the beach picture on the screen I would give the student their own copy of the picture so they could see it better. Fortunately, a visual impairment would not hinder their ability to do the discovery bags.

Extension: Ask students to pick their favorite season. Give students the poem worksheet and ask them to complete it at home and bring it back on Monday.

Directions: Using only your sense of touch, place your hand in the brown bag. Feel around and decide what you think it is. Write your answer on the line by the number that matches the number on the bag.

Remember, NO peeking in the bags! I will show everyone what the objects are at the end of the activity!

I used nature items for the contents of each bag.  I used pine cones, maple seeds (helicopters), bark, moss, leaves, pine needles, bird feather, chestnut pods, animal bones, and acorns.  I hope this is helpful. Good luck with your lesson.
