Title - Farm Babies
By - Shannon Smith
Primary Subject - Science
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts
Grade Level - K

NY Science and Mathematics Standards: 3, 4 and 6
NY ELA Standards: 1, 2 and 4

Materials required:
  • Is Your Mama A Llama? written by Deborah Guarino
  • Prepared Posterboard for a sort
  • Animal Magnets
  • Animal Puppets
  • Baggies containing animal cutouts and clothespins

    Time required: 30 minutes

Objectives: As a result of instruction, the students will be able to:
  • Identify different farm animals
  • Sort and match farm animal babies with their mothers
  • Notice similarities and differences between the babies and mothers
  • Understand that animals can be called different names according to gender or age

    Activating Prior Knowledge:
  • The teacher will elicit knowledge of baby animals after talking about the baby animal on the cover of the book.
  • While the teacher reads, the students will draw conclusions as to what animals the clues in the book describe.

    Procedure:
  • The teacher will model sorting animal magnets. All of the mother animals will go on one side of a poster board and the babies will go on the other side. The magnets are made from pictures of animals with magnets on the back.
  • After the teacher models, the students will continue the sort.
  • The students will learn the names of baby and mother animals while sorting pictures.
  • The students will each get an animal puppet. This is a picture of an animal on a Popsicle stick.
  • The teacher will elicit animal names while the students match mother and baby animal puppets.

    Follow-up:
  • The students will independently match mother and baby animals. Each student will get a baggie of animals. If it is a picture of a mother animal, the students will attach two large clothespins for legs on the picture. If it is a picture of a baby animal, the students will attach small clothespins for legs.
