SCIENCE PROJECT OF THE WEEK

MAGIC EGGS

PROBLEM: Does water get denser when you add salt or sugar?

RESEARCH: Read about density in a science book or encyclopedia. Write two or three paragraphs about what you learned.

HYPOTHESIS: How do you think the egg will act differently in the water without anything and the water with salt or sugar?

MATERIALS:          three clear glasses          salt (about 3 tablespoons)
two eggs (raw, not cooked)          sugar (about 3 tablespoons)
          food color (three colors)

PROCEDURE:
1. Fill two glasses half full with water.
2. Add three tablespoons of salt to one glass.
3. Carefully put an egg in each glass.
4. Draw a picture of each glass and describe what happened.
5. Take the egg out of the glass without salt. Carefully pour the water into the cup with the salt. Don't let the liquids mix.
6. Draw a picture of each step and describe what happened.
7. Take the egg out of the water and clean the glasses carefully.
8. Repeat step 1 using all three glasses.
9. Add three tablespoons of salt to one glass and three tablespoons of sugar to another.
10. Add one drop of color to each glass. Make sure each glass is a different color.
11. Carefully pour the salt water into the sugar water, then the plain water into the salt/sugar water.
12. Draw a picture, using colors, and describe what happened.

DATA: Your data should include all the drawings and descriptions of what happened.

CONCLUSION: This is not optional. You must explain what you learned by doing this activity.
Remember that you must answer the question you asked in your original problem statement.

NOTE: BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR PARENT OR GUARDIAN SIGNS YOUR WORK. PARENTS: YOUR SIGNATURE SHOWS YOUR STUDENT HAS DONE THE WORK.

TEACHER SECTION:
POSSIBLE HYPOTHESIS: The eggs will both float or the eggs will both sink or one will float and the other sink. The student should make a guess about which will happen.

POSSIBLE CONCLUSION: Sugar water is denser than salt water, which is denser than plain water. Student should discuss the observations and why it happened.
