SCIENCE PROJECT OF THE WEEK

OIL AND WATER

PROBLEM: Will food coloring mix with oil and water?

RESEARCH: Look up the word immiscible in a good dictionary. Write down the definition. If there are words in the definition you do not know, find out what they mean, too. Write down all definitions.

HYPOTHESIS: Have you ever tried to mix oil and water? They do not mix. What do you think will happen when you mix the food coloring with the oil? What will happen when you mix it with water?

MATERIALS:

cooking oil

dropper

water

clear plastic glasses

food coloring

PROCEDURE:

1. Pour 200 ml of water into a clear glass.

2. Pour 200 ml of oil on top of the water. Record your observations.

3. Stir the mixture. Record your observations.

4. Add 1 to 2 drops of food coloring to the mixture. Record your observations.

5. Stir the mixture. Record your observations.

DATA: Write a paragraph and discuss your observations.

CONCLUSION: This is not optional. You must explain what you learned by doing this activity.

Remember that you must answer the question you asked in your original problem statement.

NOTE: BE SURE TO HAVE YOUR PARENT OR GUARDIAN SIGNS YOUR WORK. PARENTS: YOUR SIGNATURE SHOWS YOUR STUDENT HAS DONE THE WORK.

TEACHER SECTION:

POSSIBLE HYPOTHESIS: Student should write a hypothesis stating that oil and water will or will not mix.

POSSIBLE CONCLUSION: Food coloring will form droplets in the oil as it passes through because the food coloring is immiscible in water. When it pushes down the food coloring will mix with the water, dispersing as it falls.
