Title - Beak Adaptations

Grade Level - 3-5

Topic: Birding

Objectives: When asked, the students will:

1.      Identify parts of a bird, including wing, breast, tail, etc.

2.      Observe various birds in their natural setting with use of binoculars

3.      Explore adaptations of different bird beaks through simulation activity

4.      Distinguish between different types of bird beaks

Materials:

·        binoculars

·        Beak Adaptation materials (located in Poley)

·        Charts displaying parts of birds (cover up names of birds)

·        Field guides (Birds - located in FAR Room)

Procedures:

1.      Talk to students about birds and use chart to identify the different parts of a bird (circle in Poley).  Tap into prior knowledge/ talk about the birds they are unfamiliar with.

2.      Go into bird porch and talk about some of the posters, etc.  Talk about the feeders and their lettering.

3.      Distribute binoculars and review procedures for their usage.

4.      Give students time to observe birds (10-15 minutes)

5.      Talk about the different birds they saw and what they noticed about them (example: white spot on their crown, long beak, etc)

6.      Talk about different types of beaks and how they may be used.

7.      Play the adaptation game

Closure:

Ask the question, why do you think different birds have different types of beaks?

Assessment:

·        Teacher observations during bird watching and beak adaptation game.

·        Participation during questioning and activities
