Title – A science lesson on Trees

Trees

Focus: The students will be asked what they know about trees. They will view a tree cutting and guess how old it is. After making predictions they will count the rings to verify the age of the tree.

Instruction: The students break into two groups.

Group#1 Pine cone Bird Feeders

materials: pine cones-larger ones are best

peanut butter

yarn, twine, string

craft sticks or plastic knives

newspaper

brown paper lunch bags

large bowl

wild bird seed

The students will take the yarn and tie it to the pine cone stem. Lay the newspaper over the work area. Use plastic knives to spread the peanut butter over the pine cone. Next roll the pine cone in bowl of bird seed to coat it. Then place in a paper bag with child’s name on it to take home.

Group#2 Leaf Rubbings

Materials: leaves (different sizes)

crayons or colored pencils

white paper

The students will take leaves and place them under their paper. Gently rub the crayon over the paper. The leaf’s image will appear through the paper. Choose many different leaves and colors for the paper.

Closure: Read Shel Silverstein’s book The Giving Tree and discuss the importance of trees in our environment.
