Title: Animals From Asia and Africa

Animals From Asia
Purpose of the Lesson TSW learn about three animals indigenous to Asia.
Pre-instructional: (15 min.) TTW dress up like an Asian animal (panda).
TTW play Asian music. TTW have the students guess what animal she is.
1. Instructional Procedures : (5 min.) a. TTW introduce the students to
Asia's geography by showing them the world map. b. TTW discuss with the
students Asia's population, and countries.
2. Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a. TTW tell the students a few
characteristics of an Asian animal(Siberian Tiger). b. TSW guess what
animal the teacher described. c. TTW tell the students characteristics
of the Siberian tiger. d. TSW take notes as the teacher describes the
tiger's characteristics.
3. Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a. TTW hand out a tiger word
scramble b. TSW complete the word scramble. * Remedial--For lower level
learners a alternative word search will be provided.
4. Instruction Procedures: (10 min.) a. TTW show the students on the
world map where the Komodo dragon lives. b. TTW describe the
characteristics of the Komodo dragon. c. TSW take notes as the teacher
describes the Komodo dragon. d. TSW give characteristics of the Komodo
dragon.
5. Instructional Procedure: (15 min.) a. TTW describe the giant panda's
characteristics. b. TTW have the students write the characteristics of
the panda in their journals. c. TTW show the student bamboo. d. TTW
handout Giant Panda worksheet.
6. Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a. TTW describe the camel's
characteristics. b. TSW write the characteristics in their journals. c.
TSW discuss the camel's characteristics with the teacher.
7. Instructional Procedure: (TSW do this at home.) a. TTW explain the
poem's directions. b. TSW write a poem about one of the animals they
studied in class today. c. TSW work at their own rate to complete the
poem. d. TSW include at least five characteristics of the animals they
choose. e. TSW share their poems with the class. f. TSW display their
poems on the bulletin board. g. TSW reflect in their journals about what
they learned today.
8. Instructional Procedure: (10 min) a. TTW give the students a choice
of whether to do a word search or work on the enrichment activity. b.
TTW give students an Asian word search. c. TSW will complete the word
search.

Africa
Purpose of the lesson: TSW identify animals indigenous to Africa.
Pre-Instructional: (15 min.) TTW read The Elephant's Child. TTW give
ten students animal name tags. TSW only see their tags. TTW blindfold
the ten students. TSW alphabetize themselves by making their animal
sounds(no words are aloud). 1.
Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a.
TTW introduce the students to Africa's geographic location on the world
map. b. TTW discuss with the students Africa's population and countries.
2. Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a. TTW describe the elephants
characteristics to the students. b. TSW write the characteristics in
their journals. c. TTW ask the students questions about the elephant's
characteristics.
3. Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a. TTW describe the hyena's
characteristics to the students. b. TSW write characteristics of the
hyena in their journals. c. TSW give the teacher examples of the hyena's
characteristics.
4. Instructional Procedures: (20 min.) a. TTW have the students tell
characteristics of the zebra they know from their schema b. TTW write
the characteristics stated by the students on the board. c. TTW describe
the characteristics of the zebra that the students did not state.
5. Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a. TTW ask the students to
compare the African animals discussed in class. b. TSW compare the
animals c. TTW write the comparisons on the board. d. TSW discuss the
comparisons.
6. Instructional Procedures: (20 min.) a. TTW instruct the students
about the story. b. TSW write in their journals about an African animal
they would like to be. c. TSW share their journals with the class.
7. Instructional Procedures: (TSW do this at home.) a. TSW create an
imaginary animal using various materials they have at home. b. TSW write
about their animal and include its name, characteristics, and describe
how it defends itself. c. TSW will share their animals and their
description with the class.
Day 2
Purpose of the lesson: TSW identify animals indigenous to
Pre-Instructional: (15 min.) TTW read A Wise Monkey Tale. The teacher
and the students will sing Old McDonald had a jungle. TSW share their
inventive animals. TTW have the students identify African animal tracks.
1. Instructional: (10 min.) a. TTW describe the lion's characteristics.
b. TSW write the characteristics in their journals. c. TSW discuss the
lion's characteristics with the teacher.
2. Instructional: (10 min.) a. TTW describe the gazelle's
characteristics. b. TSW write the characteristics in their journals. c.
TSW discuss the gazelle's characteristics with the teacher.
3. Instructional: (10 min.) a. TTW describe the giraffe's
characteristics. b. TSW write their characteristics in their journals.
c. TSW give examples of an giraffe's characteristics.
4. Instructional Procedures: (20 min.) a. TTW instruct the students on
researching baby African animals. b. TSW choose one African baby animal
to research. c. TSW will take down notes as they research the animal.
5. Instructional Procedures: (10 min.) a. TSW create a birth
announcement to announce the birth of a baby African animal. b. TTW post
all birth announcements out in the hall.
6. Instructional Procedure: (20 min.) a. TTW instruct the students on
how to make a animal mobile. b. TSW will make a mobile. c. TTW analyze
teacher effectiveness by viewing taped lesson. Enrichment : TSW play the
Jungle Walk Game.
