Title - Tic-Tac-Toe with Insects and Cold or Warm Blooded Animals
By - Alice Brunner (Extended by Kyle Yamnitz)
Primary Subject - Science
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - K-2
To help 1st graders distinguish our study of insects, reptiles, and mammals, I created a Tic-Tac-Toe game. You can make a 9x9 grid on paper to use for the Tic-Tac-Toe board. Cut out pictures from old magazines, and glue them to pieces of construction paper. Pick two subjects to study (i.e. Mammals & Reptiles). Give pairs of students the Tic-Tac-Toe boards and shuffled pictures of both types of animals. Allow students to play Tic-Tac-Toe with each other. One student would be Mammals and one student would be Reptiles. The students need to watch each others' moves to make sure the proper animal is played. If one player is "Reptiles" and plays a Mammal, then the other Mammal player has an extra Mammal on the board. Students will be very careful to choose the right pictures, which will help them to focus on the differences.
I hope this will help other teachers and moms with their unit animal studies. This could also be used for any other topic to help students distinguish between two types.
