By - Allison Oldham
Primary Subject - Social Studies
Secondary Subjects -
Grade Level - K-3
Objective: Students will learn about the origin of Thanksgiving.
Procedure. Prompt the students by asking about previous knowledge. Ask, "What does the word Pilgrim mean?" Discuss the hardships..The Speedwells initial problems, lack of fresh vegetables and fruit on board, sickness and death, and the tight quarters....
Have a masking taped area in the classroom that will depict 1/8th of the size of the Mayflower-8ftX14ft. Then bring 13 children into the rectangle. Have them sit down and tell them that if they were Pilgrims on board, they'd have to survive and deal with confined space like this for three months. No running around.
Then, have children read "The story of Thanksgiving". The children then take a large piece of construction paper and fold it in half. Instruct them to draw a picture of what the Pilgrims were thankful for on one side. On the other side draw a picture of what you are thankful for.
