Title - Touch

Objectives:
TCW be introduced to sensory descriptors, including smooth,
rough, hard, soft, cold, and warm.
TCW understand that objects can be described with one or more of
these words, such as cold and hard.
Materials:
"feelie" boxes
items of different textures
Procedure:
1.Introduce the sense of touch by asking students what they can
do with their hands. Lead the class to see that they touch
things with their hands, and then ask them if everything feels
the same when they touch it. Ask the class to give some
examples of what different things feel like. You may have to
lead the discussion by asking them how the carpet or floor
feels. Introduce the words rough, smooth, soft, hard, hot,
and cold, if students do not mention these, and be sure to
give examples of each so that students can begin to
associate these words with concrete examples.
2.Divide the class into three groups and place each group at a
station. At each station, every student will have an
opportunity to touch the objects or substances there. The
three stations will be:
-"Feelie" Boxes: Place three or four "feelie" boxes on a table with
smocks for students to wear. Each box should have the lid on with
a hole cut out, so that students can put their hand in the box
without seeing inside it. Have each student put there hand in as
many of the boxes as they want and then describe what it feels
like. If students want to make a guess about what each item is,
allow them to do so.
-Hot/Cold: In each of the three buckets, place water, with one
having cold water, one having luke warm water, and one having
hot (but not too hot) water. Have each student put their hand in
each bucket and then describe what each feels like and how they
compare with each other.
-Textured Paper: Place the various kinds of paper or fabric on a table
so that students can pick each up and feel the texture of it. Have enough kinds
of examples so that everyone in the group will be able to participate without
having to wait. Ask students to describe how each feels, and how they
compare to each other.
