Title - Taste
By - Mollie Tucker
Subject - Social Studies, Science
Suggested Age - 12-18 months
Unit: Senses
Objectives:
TCW be introduced to bitter, sour, sweet, and salty foods and/or
drinks.
Materials:
pretzels, jam, baker's chocolate, and a lemon
variety of other foods that fit into the salt/sweet/ bitter/sour
categories and enough of each so that every student can try it
small cups and napkins
floor bar graph or grid
construction paper
markers or crayons
Procedure:
1.Give the students a small portion of one of the first four foods.
Have the students tell how it tastes (good, bad, etc.) and
note the sensory descriptor that goes along with that taste.
Proceed in the same way for the other three foods. You may
have to tell the students that what they taste in the chocolate
is bitter, due to the fact that they may have no knowledge of
bitterness. Use this method for salty, sour, and sweet as
well.
2.Once the class has identified all four descriptors, those being
salty, sweet, sour, and bitter, begin the taste test. Give the
students a new item to taste, and ask them about the words you
have just discussed. Ask them which of those words fits the taste of
the item they just ate or drank. Move on with the taste test, talking
about each item and how it tastes.
