Title - Passports to the World
By - Chris Hamilton
Subject - Social Studies
Grade Level - 6th

I. The students construct a passport and write their name, birthdate, birthplace, issue date, etc....like a real passport...a space for their picture and to endorse it with their signature. They may decorate the front with the theme..."Passport to the World".

As the year progresses and they write summaries of international current events, they receive a world traveler stamp in their passport.

II. Students are encouraged to dress as tourists...present-day, past tourists, and even the future. Prizes are given to: tackiest tourist, most sophicated, best prepared, traveling companions, and more ideas.

III. Discuss "Culture" and the elements of culture....housing, food, traditions, rituals, family, and more. They make a collage of pictures from the elements of culture...pictures from travel magazines work great. It does not have to be a specific culture...just the elements in general.

IV. Write a letter to an embassy in New York seeking information about a particular country. The addresses may be found in a recent almanac.

V. Research a culture and later in the year create their own cultures using the elements.
