Title - Oral History Lesson #3

Grade Level - 4-6
Objectives:
-- To write a narrative from notes obtained in the interview process.
-- To learn about the life of an elder in the community.
Materials:
-- Paper
-- Pencils
-- Computer/word processor (if possible)
-- Printer
Procedure:
1. Students will transcribe their notes from the interview.
2. Once the notes have been put into a usable format the students will begin writing their narratives.
3. Step One: write a rough draft or sloppy copy
4. Step Two: read and clarify anything that is hard to follow
5. Step Three: have a friend read it and make suggestions
6. Step Four: make any necessary changes and rewrite
7. Step Five: edit for grammar, punctuation and syntax
8. Step Six: student rereads and lets teacher read
9. Step Seven: write or type final copy, proofread
10. After the final copy is ready, turn in and teacher will copy it for interviewees.
11. All final copies will be compiled into a book and will be available for checkout from class library.
12. Mail or take final copies to interviewee.
13. Extension: have interviewees come into the classroom for a party and reading of the book.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed for their work based on a rubric for each stage of the writing process.
