Title – Places in My Community

Inductive Lesson

Objective:
The students will demonstrate their understanding of community by identifying pictures of their neighborhood and defining the purpose of each location.

Materials:
— Various photographs of key locations within the community.
— Typed location identification cards.
— Direction card for the “reader” to read to the group.

Exploratory Activity:
— Each table will be given an envelope with assorted photographs and separate identification cards.
— The reader will read the ID cards and the students will match the cards to the appropriate photograph.

Finding Patterns:
— Students will discuss the importance of each locale.
— Students will group the locations according to common attributes.

Examine additional data:
— Each group will give the teacher a report of their findings.
— Through class discussion, students will compare/contrast the similarities and/or differences of their discoveries.

Generalizations:
— Students will return to their group discussions to decide which locations every community should have and why.
— After 5 minutes the teacher will ask for responses from each group and those responses will be recorded on chart paper.

Metacognition:
— The teacher will read prepared SITUATION CARDS and students will determine if their community is equipped to handle the situations.
— Students will reflect and discuss what would happen if we didn’t have these locales in our community.

Application and Assessment:
— Each student will list one location that they would like to see added to our community with 2 reasons why it would be good to have.
