HALLOWEEN HUNT

Title - HALLOWEEN HUNT

Grade Level - 2nd or 3rd
BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVE: When presented with a simplified map of the school and using Halloween shapes, students will be able to (SWBAT) read the map and follow directions to hunt for a "treasure" leading to an ice cream party w/ 100% accuracy.

PRE-REQ SKILLS: SWBAT read and write on minimum of 1st grade level, previous experience w/ reading maps, identify school map and rooms in building, identify Halloween shapes (i.e. pumpkins, witches, ghosts, cats), distinguish between orange and black, identify their name.

STAGES OF LEARNING: Knowledge, Comprehension, Analysis, Application.

MULITIPLE INTELLIGENCES: Interpersonal, Bodily/Kinesthetic, Visual/Spatial, and Logical/Mathematical.

MATERIALS: Black and Orange construction paper for name tags, directional clues written on Halloween cutouts, Halloween cut outs of witches, ghosts, pumpkins, and cats, simplified school map, map directions worksheet, teacher pirate costume, cooperation of participating faculty and principal permission, Ice cream party supplies.

SET INDUCTION:
Teacher will (TW) enter class dressed as a pirate.
TW ask students who would like to go on a hunt for hidden treasure?
TW inform students we will be going on a Halloween hunt around the school searching for "treasure."

DEMONSTRATION:
TW divide students into 2 cooperative teams: Orange and Black.
TW explain that each team must use a map and search for clues written on Halloween figures around the school to find the treasure.
TW read sample clue and explain what next steps would be.

GUIDED PRACTICE:
Students will (SW) find their names on either a black or orange name tag and break into teams.
TW assign positions to each member of team (i.e. clue reader, navigator, etc)
SW perform practice hunt around class before venturing out into school.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
SW be given simplified map of school.
SW begin searching around school using clues to find treasure.
TW assist as necessary.

CLOSURE:
All clues will lead the teams to the cafeteria where an ice cream party awaits them.
TW will review map reading skills and the shapes the clues were written on in relation to Halloween.

EVALUATION:
SW be given a blank map worksheet of a school.
SW follow directions on page to draw a line around the building from one Halloween shape to the next.
SW write the name of the room where the clues led them.

FOLLOW UP:
SW discuss how it felt to hunt for treasure.
SW write in journal what they liked the best about the Halloween Hunt.
