Title - Mapping Routes and Distances

Teaching Strategy: Small Groups
Time Required: 30 minutes

This Alabama mapping lesson could easily be adapted to any region for the purpose of teaching map skills.

1. Concept: Distance.
    The students will be mapping from one location to another and determining the distance between the places. The students will learn to read a map. The students will learn where different places are on the map.
2. ALCOS:
      #1. Extend the development of map and globe skills.
    #48. Locate significant places in present-day Alabama.
3. Behavioral Objectives:
    The student will be able to:
    1. Use a map scale to determine distance between places on a map.
    2. Read a map using various map skills.
    3. Will learn where different places on the map are located.
    4. Will be able to work in small groups.
4. Materials: Alabama Maps, Pencils

5. Teaching Procedures:
    A. Motivation:

      Have you ever wanted to know how far it is to drive from Mobile to Montgomery? Today we are going to map routes from Mobile to different places and find out how far you would have to drive.

    B. Instructional Procedures:

      1. The teacher will go over how to use the scale on the map to map how far it is from one place to another.
      2. The teacher will divide the students into small groups of students.
      3. The teacher will pass out Alabama maps to each student.
      4. The teacher will give the students three different places to map to and from.
      5. The students will have to find the shortest route from one place to another.

    C. Closure:
      The students will have present to the class and tell how far it is from one place to another.
6. Evaluation: The teacher will evaluate the students when they present to the class.
