By - Marie Allen
Primary Subject - Social Studies
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts, Other
Grade Level - 3-6
Community Unit Table of Contents:
Service Project - Part 3
TSW: Design and implement a service project to be done as a class in a familiar community (neighborhood or school).
TSW: Reflect on the effect of their project.
Activity:
The class will review the pictures taken during the project. They will work together to place them in chronological order. Each student will pick one picture and create a book page for it. The page must include a caption of what is happening in the picture and a reflection of it. For example, "Here we are deciding what colors of paint we will need. We couldn't agree so we had to take a vote." The student will decorate the page and prepare it for publication.
Each student will also write a formal reflection detailing what they learned while working on the project. They will include what they learned about working together-what was easy, what was hard, how they feel the project benefits the community, and a personal story about working on it. All of the pages will be laminated and bound together in chronological order, with the students reflections interspersed.
Materials: Paper, markers, glue, decorating/scrapbooking materials, photographs from project, laminator, spiral binding machine.
Assessment: Assessment will be based on the students effort and cooperation throughout the project, and their written reflection. See Rubric.
