State Goal: 16.A.2a – Read historical stories and determine events which influenced
their writing.

Narrative: This activity consists of introducing the topic of Native Americans to the students using a KWL chart. The students will read together, as a class, the novel Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. This activity will last for 4 weeks.

Objectives: Students will fill in the KWL class chart.

Students will read the novel by Dee Brown

Materials: KWL chart

Novel – Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown

Procedure:

1.Teacher will brainstorm with the students to see what they know about Native Americans. The teacher records the information in the K column of the KWL chart.

2.The teacher will add questions to the W column when the students suggest information and when confusion arises.

3.The teacher will also allow students to suggest their own questions they would like to explore on the Native American topic. These questions may also be written in the students journal.

4.The teacher will read sections of the novel every class period for four weeks and the students will begin reflecting on what they learned. The teacher will allow students to begin filling in the L column at the end of every reading session.

5.The teacher will instruct students to write a journal entry for every chapter of the novel. The teacher will also show her own journal entry from the novel to get students motivated to write quality work on their own.

6.At the end of the novel, the teacher will discuss with the students what they have learned by reviewing the KWL chart.

Assessment: Students will be assessed by observation of the students and by participation in filling in the KWL chart.
