Title - A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln

Objective: The students will be able to use a map of the United States to locate important areas in Lincoln's life.

Teacher Materials:
    A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln, by David Adler
    Classroom map of the United States
Student Materials:
    A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln, by David Adler
    Small map of the United States
    Pencil
Model: The teacher will use a big map in the classroom to show the important places in Lincoln's life while the students locate the places on their individual maps.

Guided Practice/Procedure:
    Day #1:
      1) Before reading, ask the students if they know who Lincoln was. Assess their prior knowledge.
      2) Keep a running log of the students' responses on a piece of paper on the board.
      3) Read A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln as a group.

    Day #2:
      4) Review the book as necessary before beginning the day's lesson.
      5) As the students are reading as a group, use a map to locate the important areas in Lincoln's life.
        a) Kentucky - where he was born
        b) Indiana - moved in 1816
        c) Illinois - moved in 1830
        d) Mississippi River
        e) Washington D.C.
        f) Gettysburg, PA
      6) The students will be marking the areas the group finds in the book on their
      individual maps while the teacher locates the areas on the classroom map.
Check for Understanding: Observe the students as they mark on their maps the locations discussed.

Closure: Review the places discussed and marked on the map. Ask the students if they can revise their list completed at the beginning of the lesson (prior knowledge of Lincoln).
