Title - Voices of the Revolution
By - Cindy Hamilton
Primary Subject - Social Studies
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts, Computers / Internet
Grade Level - 5th

Materials:
Microsoft PowerPoint or Apple's Keynote, reference materials (World Book is a good source) for information on individuals from the Revolutionary War, LCD Projector that a computer it can be hooked up to, a screen to project the slide show on and clipart of the Revolutionary War.
Objectives:
After reading stories in their language arts anthology about individuals from the Revolutionary War, students will select one of those individuals to create a presentation on. Students will use World Book, Internet, etc. to conduct research. Students will incorporate clip art into their presentation by copying and pasting from a clip art file.
Criteria for Grade:
The presentation must include the following:

  • Personal History about the individual (When was he/she born? When did he/she die? What did he or she do prior to the Revolutionary War? Where was he/she from? Was he/she married? Did he/she have any children?).
  • Revolutionary War Role (What role did this individual play in the Revolutionary War?)
  • Post-Revolutionary War Role (What did this individual do after the Revolutionary War?)
  • Presentation must include at least 3 pieces of clip art.
Assessment:
Create your rubric based on what you are looking for. Students should be graded on 3 categories:

  • Answering all the questions about the individual
  • Using PowerPoint or Keynote and including clip art (this shows the ability to use editing across multiple software applications)
  • The ability to research and choose information for their presentation.
Prior Knowledge:
Prior to student completing this project they need to have practice doing research, selecting correct information to include in their presentation and knowledge of how to use PowerPoint or Keynote.
Lesson:
  • Discuss with students what they are expected to do for this project, including all the requirements.
  • Have students research information on their own from the Revolutionary War.
  • Conduct a mini-lesson on noting sources used for information.
  • Students begin working on their slide show (It takes about three to four 45-minute sessions for students to complete this project).
  • Students can present their slide show to the class, burn it to a CD, save it in a folder or print it for the teacher to grade (You decide which option works for you).
