Title - African Animals
By - Sarah Lalewicz
Primary Subject - Social Studies
Secondary Subjects - Language Arts
Grade Level - 3rd

Content:
Students will read books about African animals. They will write sentences about the animals. They will use Kidspiration for an activity.
Learning Resources and Materials:
  • School Library,
  • Books on African animals,
  • Computer
Development of Lesson:
    Introduction:
Students pick out books on African animals to read independently. Next, they will share what they have learned and scaffolding will be used to lead them to the commonality that the books share: they are all books that have animals that can be found in Africa.

    Methods/Procedures:
Next, students will listen to a reading of the book African Animals (True Books: Animals) By Ann O. Squire. During the reading, we will stop to discuss any new words, names, facts that are interesting. The students will then go to the computer or computers. (If there is enough for everyone, they can work individually or you can pair them up.) Have them go to Kidspiration. (You can already have this up for them.) They will then match the picture of the animal with the correct name. Then they will write something they learned about each animal.

    Accommodations/Adaptations:
If students are unable to match correctly, they can look back into their books or have a peer partner help them. If it is too easy, I would have them write more about each animal in a story form or have them make their own African animal book with three facts about each animal.

    Assessment/Evaluation:
If the students are able to correctly match the animals and write the correct facts about each animal. I will monitor that in the Kidspiration activity.

    Closure:
Finally, I would have them back sitting as a group and just go through and make a list of the animals that are found in Africa. This will be done just by their memory and what they have just learned.
