* Students have little knowledge about the different classifications of tourism.
* Students are able to work cooperatively.

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Identify the different types of tourism and travel.
2. Create a set of criteria for one type of tourism or travel.
3. Evaluate the criteria that their peers decide upon for their type of travel or tourism.

* one piece of paper for each group.
* one marker for each group.
* cards with different types of trips and vacations on each one. Have one for each student

1. Ask the students a series of question to evoke interest in the topic.
          * Have you ever been away from home
          * Where did you go
          * Why did you go.
2. Introduce students to the different classifications of travel and tourism. ex) adventure tourism, eco-tourism, business travel, vacations, pilgrimages, educational tourism.
3. Have them brainstorm quickly what they think each classification entails.
4. Give students an index card containing information or an example that fits into one of the travel/tourism categories already established.
5. Ask students to mill around the room and find others whose card fits the same category.
6. Have students with cards in the same category present themselves to the rest of the class.
7. Have the students in their groups to come up with a set of criteria to establish their type of tourism or travel.
8. Conclude by announcing that this unit will look at each type of travel or tourism in greater detail.

* The format of the classroom may not be optimal for the card sort activity, and the students may be sitting too far spread out.
* The students may be distracted by their own teaching taking place after mine.

* Get to class early to make sure the classroom is arranged to suit the lesson planed.
* Try to engage and encourage the students so that they forget about their own presentations and participate in the exercises.

If the students don't understand what the tourism and travel types are => Go over them again and give very clear examples.
If the students are hesitant about participating => Try to make them feel more comfortable by asking them prompting questions.

Formative:
How well the students participate.
How fast the students find their classifications.
Summative:
How well each group comes up with their criteria.

If there is extra time or the students are extremely quick to grasp the content, perhaps they could write about some place they really want to visit and decide what type of tourism or travel that it would be classified as.

List on the board so that the students may write down the different criteria for each type of travel and tourism
Use a lot of examples to help illustrate the different types.

Next Class => Eco-tourism
Have them for homework think about the following questions.
* What is eco-tourism?
* Who would it appeal to?
* Where could you do it?
