Description:
The object of this lesson is to increase the students' knowledge of how a
grocery store works. The lesson will also make them realize how important the
grocery store business is to their neighborhood.
Objective:
After a trip to the store students will be able to correctly identify certain
concepts and terms associated with the grocery store, the students will also be
able to answer the summary questions quiz posted by the teacher after the
lesson is completed.
Other objectives:
Students will be able to recognize how the items are categorized in the
store.
They will be introduced to taxing, and how much they should add, and
which items are taxed.
they will also be able to participate in a role-playing activity description
a scenario from the classroom grocery store.
Materials:
Typical examples of grocery store items, be sure to include both items
that would and would not be taxed.
Pictures of grocery store people and places.
Items to be used during grocery store role play.
Instructional Activity:
The students will have several items found in a grocery store and will put
them into categories/symbolic aisles. After a discussion and display of grocery
store pictures, they will be able to identify who is in a grocery store, and what
they do. After all the vocabulary and basic concepts are mastered the
class will participate in a store role playing activity, which will include a stock
person, manager, cashier, shopper and a bag person. In correlating a math
lesson coupons and adding the prices could be introduced.
Lesson Summary:
After the role-play activity is completed the teacher will pose questions to
the class, asking what is the job of each person and how items are arranged in a
store. The students will also be given time to ask questions of their own.
Assessment:
The students will be given a small fill in the blank quiz that uses the new
grocery store vocabulary words. A word bank will be given. During the extra
time, students can compost sentences or draw pictures detailing a personal
grocery store experience.
