Title – European Settlers and Native Americans

Objective: SC 8-1.2 Categorize events according to the ways they improved or worsened relations between Native Americans and European Settlers.

Materials:

Large sheet of Bulletin Board paper

Markers

Days: 1 to 3

Process:

1. Use different media such as videos, text, personal accounts and others to explain the complex relationships between Native Americans and European Settlers. (Field trips to native communities are a great tool to use.) You can find journals and personal accounts in you local library.

2. Have the students use what they have read to complete a cause and effect chart showing what the result of each action had on the relationship between Native Americans and Europeans. Use the bulletin board paper to make a class chart that could also be hung in the hallway.

3. Encourage the students to think about the effects of native slavery, trading, and relationships to specific people.

Close:

Tell the students that the native population is very small now. What are some of the negative actions taken by European settlers that could have caused this drop in the Native American population?
